The last day in Mexico

Actualizado: 11 may 2020

Isla Mujeres is a Mexican island in the Caribbean Sea, 13 kilometers off the coast of Cancun. It is a vacation destination known for its beaches, such as Playa Norte, with resorts and activities for snorkeling and scuba diving on the surrounding coral reefs. At the southern end is Punta Sur, where there is a lighthouse, the remains of a Mayan temple and a sanctuary for sea turtles.

The Underwater Museum of Art or MUSA is a museum located under the waters of the Mexican Caribbean Sea, in the waters surrounding Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Punta Nizuc. It was founded in 2009 by Dr. Jaime González Cano, at that time, director of the Costa Occidental National Park of Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún and Punta Nizuc; Roberto Díaz Abraham, in that year president of Asociados Náuticos de Cancún (ANC); and British artist Jason deCaires Taylor, the leading artist in the history of the museum, with nearly half a thousand life-size figurative sculptures. The museum was officially opened in November 2010, during the celebration of COP 16.

Today Musa is one of the largest and most ambitious underwater attractions in the world. Starting in 2013, the English artist Musa came out due to the withdrawal of financial support by the Federal Government. This was the first crisis of the museum, since in addition, the museum stopped having the workshop winery in Puerto Morelos. With an average of 400,000 visitors each year, it has contributed more than $ 36 million annually to tourism in the town of Cancun.
